Pansari Developers Limited's (NSE:PANSARI) 27% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up
Pansari Developers Limited (NSE:PANSARI) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 16% is also fairly reasonable.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Pansari Developers' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 35.1x is worth a mention when the median P/E in India is similar at about 34x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for Pansari Developers as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Pansari Developers would need to produce growth that's similar to the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 159%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 40% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 25% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's curious that Pansari Developers' P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent earnings trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
What We Can Learn From Pansari Developers' P/E?
Pansari Developers appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump getting its P/E back in line with most other companies. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
We've established that Pansari Developers currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as this earnings performance isn't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 2 warning signs for Pansari Developers (1 is a bit concerning!) that you need to be mindful of.
