There's Reason For Concern Over Vimta Labs Limited's (NSE:VIMTALABS) Massive 29% Price Jump
Vimta Labs Limited (NSE:VIMTALABS) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 29% gain in the last month alone. The last month tops off a massive increase of 133% in the last year.
After such a large jump in price, Vimta Labs may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 45.6x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios under 27x and even P/E's lower than 15x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for Vimta Labs as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to beat most other companies over the coming period, which has increased investors’ willingness to pay up for the stock. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, Vimta Labs would need to produce outstanding growth well in excess of the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 32% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 46% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 25% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it concerning that Vimta Labs is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Shares in Vimta Labs have built up some good momentum lately, which has really inflated its P/E. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that Vimta Labs currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Vimta Labs (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
