Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Vimta Labs Limited (NSE:VIMTALABS) Even After 26% Share Price Boost
Vimta Labs Limited (NSE:VIMTALABS) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 45%.
Even after such a large jump in price, there still wouldn't be many who think Vimta Labs' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 30x is worth a mention when the median P/E in India is similar at about 32x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/E ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.
As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Vimta Labs over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is moderate because investors think the company might still do enough to be in line with the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Vimta Labs' is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 13% decrease to the company's bottom line. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 200% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 24% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
In light of this, it's curious that Vimta Labs' P/E sits in line with the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Vimta Labs' P/E?
Its shares have lifted substantially and now Vimta Labs' P/E is also back up to the market median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
Our examination of Vimta Labs revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
Having said that, be aware Vimta Labs is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, you should know about.
