We Think You Should Be Aware Of Some Concerning Factors In Saregama India's (NSE:SAREGAMA) Earnings
The market shrugged off Saregama India Limited's (NSE:SAREGAMA) solid earnings report. Our analysis showed that there are some concerning factors in the earnings that investors may be cautious of.
A Closer Look At Saregama India's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. This ratio tells us how much of a company's profit is not backed by free cashflow.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
For the year to September 2025, Saregama India had an accrual ratio of 0.36. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow was a lot less than its statutory profit, which makes us doubt the utility of profit as a guide. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of ₹1.1b despite its profit of ₹2.03b, mentioned above. It's worth noting that Saregama India generated positive FCF of ₹1.7b a year ago, so at least they've done it in the past. However, that's not all there is to consider. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Given the accrual ratio, it's not overly surprising that Saregama India's profit was boosted by unusual items worth ₹204m in the last twelve months. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. We ran the numbers on most publicly listed companies worldwide, and it's very common for unusual items to be once-off in nature. Which is hardly surprising, given the name. Assuming those unusual items don't show up again in the current year, we'd thus expect profit to be weaker next year (in the absence of business growth, that is).
Our Take On Saregama India's Profit Performance
Saregama India had a weak accrual ratio, but its profit did receive a boost from unusual items. Considering all this we'd argue Saregama India's profits probably give an overly generous impression of its sustainable level of profitability. In light of this, if you'd like to do more analysis on the company, it's vital to be informed of the risks involved. Every company has risks, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Saregama India (of which 1 can't be ignored!) you should know about.
Our examination of Saregama India has focussed on certain factors that can make its earnings look better than they are. And, on that basis, we are somewhat skeptical. But there is always more to discover if you are capable of focussing your mind on minutiae. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
