Here's Why I Think GTPL Hathway (NSE:GTPL) Is An Interesting Stock
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like GTPL Hathway (NSE:GTPL). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Conversely, a loss-making company is yet to prove itself with profit, and eventually the sweet milk of external capital may run sour.

How Quickly Is GTPL Hathway Increasing Earnings Per Share?
If you believe that markets are even vaguely efficient, then over the long term you'd expect a company's share price to follow its earnings per share (EPS). It's no surprise, then, that I like to invest in companies with EPS growth. As a tree reaches steadily for the sky, GTPL Hathway's EPS has grown 18% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be smiling.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. GTPL Hathway maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 14% to ₹24b. That's a real positive.

GTPL Hathway isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₹13b. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are GTPL Hathway Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
It makes me feel more secure owning shares in a company if insiders also own shares, thusly more closely aligning our interests. So it is good to see that GTPL Hathway insiders have a significant amount of capital invested in the stock. Indeed, they hold ₹2.5b worth of its stock. That's a lot of money, and no small incentive to work hard. Those holdings account for over 19% of the company; visible skin in the game.
Does GTPL Hathway Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about GTPL Hathway's strong EPS growth. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. So this is very likely the kind of business that I like to spend time researching, with a view to discerning its true value.
