Little Excitement Around Veedol Corporation Limited's (NSE:VEEDOL) Earnings

Veedol Corporation Limited's (NSE:VEEDOL) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.5x might make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 34x and even P/E's above 64x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/E.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Veedol as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Veedol?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Veedol's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 33%. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 26% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

In light of this, it's understandable that Veedol's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.

The Key Takeaway

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Veedol maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
