Here's Why We Think SP Refractories (NSE:SPRL) Might Deserve Your Attention Today

It's common for many investors, especially those who are inexperienced, to buy shares in companies with a good story even if these companies are loss-making. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like SP Refractories (NSE:SPRL). While this doesn't necessarily speak to whether it's undervalued, the profitability of the business is enough to warrant some appreciation - especially if its growing.

SP Refractories' Earnings Per Share Are Growing

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price should eventually follow. Therefore, there are plenty of investors who like to buy shares in companies that are growing EPS. Shareholders will be happy to know that SP Refractories' EPS has grown 24% each year, compound, over three years. As a general rule, we'd say that if a company can keep up that sort of growth, shareholders will be beaming.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. SP Refractories' EBIT margins have actually improved by 4.3 percentage points in the last year, to reach 7.4%, but, on the flip side, revenue was down 16%. That's not a good look.

In the chart below, you can see how the company has grown earnings and revenue, over time. To see the actual numbers, click on the chart.

SP Refractories isn't a huge company, given its market capitalisation of ₹298m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.

Are SP Refractories Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that SP Refractories insiders own a significant number of shares certainly is appealing. Indeed, with a collective holding of 69%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. Intuition will tell you this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. Although, with SP Refractories being valued at ₹298m, this is a small company we're talking about. That means insiders only have ₹207m worth of shares, despite the large proportional holding. This isn't an overly large holding but it should still keep the insiders motivated to deliver the best outcomes for shareholders.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but shareholders may be wondering if remuneration policies are in their best interest. A brief analysis of the CEO compensation suggests they are. For companies with market capitalisations under ₹17b, like SP Refractories, the median CEO pay is around ₹3.3m.

SP Refractories' CEO only received compensation totalling ₹1.9m in the year to March 2023. You could consider this pay as somewhat symbolic, which suggests the CEO does not need a lot of compensation to stay motivated. CEO compensation is hardly the most important aspect of a company to consider, but when it's reasonable, that gives a little more confidence that leadership are looking out for shareholder interests. It can also be a sign of good governance, more generally.

Is SP Refractories Worth Keeping An Eye On?

If you believe that share price follows earnings per share you should definitely be delving further into SP Refractories' strong EPS growth. If you still have your doubts, remember too that company insiders have a considerable investment aligning themselves with the shareholders and CEO pay is quite modest compared to similarly sized companiess. Everyone has their own preferences when it comes to investing but it definitely makes SP Refractories look rather interesting indeed.
