Shree Cement's (NSE:SHREECEM) investors will be pleased with their 16% return over the last three years
It hasn't been the best quarter for Shree Cement Limited (NSE:SHREECEM) shareholders, since the share price has fallen 12% in that time. But at least the stock is up over the last three years. In that time, it is up 14%, which isn't bad, but not amazing either.
With that in mind, it's worth seeing if the company's underlying fundamentals have been the driver of long term performance, or if there are some discrepancies.
To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.
Shree Cement was able to grow its EPS at 2.4% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. This EPS growth is lower than the 5% average annual increase in the share price. This indicates that the market is feeling more optimistic on the stock, after the last few years of progress. It is quite common to see investors become enamoured with a business, after a few years of solid progress. This optimism is also reflected in the fairly generous P/E ratio of 55.58.

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Shree Cement shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 11% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 2% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Shree Cement better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with Shree Cement , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
