Rallis India Limited (NSE:RALLIS) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 28% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 59% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, Rallis India may be sending bearish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 43.9x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios under 33x and even P/E's lower than 19x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.

Rallis India certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings performance will continue. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Rallis India's Growth Trending?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the market for P/E ratios like Rallis India's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 61% last year. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 35% overall. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 21% per annum over the next three years. With the market predicted to deliver 22% growth per year, the company is positioned for a comparable earnings result.

With this information, we find it interesting that Rallis India is trading at a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From Rallis India's P/E?

Rallis India's P/E is getting right up there since its shares have risen strongly. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

We've established that Rallis India currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is only in line with the wider market. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
