The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But if you pick the right stock, you can make a lot more than 100%. For example, the Prism Johnson Limited (NSE:PRSMJOHNSN) share price had more than doubled in just one year - up 208%. It's also good to see the share price up 30% over the last quarter. However, the longer term returns haven't been so impressive, with the stock up just 1.6% in the last three years.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Over the last twelve months Prism Johnson went from profitable to unprofitable. While this may prove temporary, we'd consider it a negative, so we would not have expected to see the share price up. We might get a clue to explain the share price move by looking to other metrics.

We doubt the modest 0.9% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. Prism Johnson's revenue actually dropped 16% over last year. So using a snapshot of key business metrics doesn't give us a good picture of why the market is bidding up the stock.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Prism Johnson has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 208% in the last twelve months. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 8% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Prism Johnson better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Prism Johnson (of which 1 is potentially serious!) you should know about.
