GFL (NSE:GFLLIMITED) Shareholders Received A Total Return Of Negative 13% In The Last Three Years
For many investors, the main point of stock picking is to generate higher returns than the overall market. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term GFL Limited (NSE:GFLLIMITED) shareholders, since the share price is down 88% in the last three years, falling well short of the market return of around 29%. In contrast, the stock price has popped 8.3% in the last thirty days. However, this may be a matter of broader market optimism, since stocks are up 8.8% in the same time.
While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

GFL isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually expect strong revenue growth. That's because it's hard to be confident a company will be sustainable if revenue growth is negligible, and it never makes a profit.
In the last three years GFL saw its revenue shrink by 21% per year. That's definitely a weaker result than most pre-profit companies report. And as you might expect the share price has been weak too, dropping at a rate of 23% per year. We prefer leave it to clowns to try to catch falling knives, like this stock. There is a good reason that investors often describe buying a sharply falling stock price as 'trying to catch a falling knife'. Think about it.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?
We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between GFL's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. GFL's TSR of was a loss of 13% for the 3 years. That wasn't as bad as its share price return, because it has paid dividends.
A Different Perspective
Investors in GFL had a tough year, with a total loss of 19%, against a market gain of about 40%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 7%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with GFL , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
