When close to half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 34x, you may consider Clean Science and Technology Limited (NSE:CLEAN) as a stock to avoid entirely with its 66.2x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

While the market has experienced earnings growth lately, Clean Science and Technology's earnings have gone into reverse gear, which is not great. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

NSEI:CLEAN Price to Earnings Ratio vs Industry July 26th 2024
Keen to find out how analysts think Clean Science and Technology's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

Clean Science and Technology's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 17%. This has soured the latest three-year period, which nevertheless managed to deliver a decent 23% overall rise in EPS. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the ten analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 29% per year over the next three years. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 21% per year growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Clean Science and Technology's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.

What We Can Learn From Clean Science and Technology's P/E?

Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Clean Science and Technology maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

There are also other vital risk factors to consider and we've discovered 2 warning signs for Clean Science and Technology (1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) that you should be aware of before investing here.

It's important to make sure you look for a great company, not just the first idea you come across. So take a peek at this free list of interesting companies with strong recent earnings growth (and a low P/E).
