Andhra Sugars' (NSE:ANDHRSUGAR) Dividend Will Be Reduced To ₹0.80

The Andhra Sugars Limited (NSE:ANDHRSUGAR) has announced that on 29th of September, it will be paying a dividend of₹0.80, which a reduction from last year's comparable dividend. However, the dividend yield of 1.1% is still a decent boost to shareholder returns.

Andhra Sugars' Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage

A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Based on the last payment, Andhra Sugars was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.

Looking forward, EPS could fall by 28.0% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could be 44%, which we are pretty comfortable with and we think is feasible on an earnings basis.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from ₹0.60 total annually to ₹0.80. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 2.9% per annum over that time. We're glad to see the dividend has risen, but with a limited rate of growth and fluctuations in the payments the total shareholder return may be limited.

The Dividend Has Limited Growth Potential

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Earnings per share has been sinking by 28% over the last five years. Dividend payments are likely to come under some pressure unless EPS can pull out of the nosedive it is in.

In Summary

Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. We don't think Andhra Sugars is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.

Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
