Andhra Paper's (NSE:ANDHRAPAP) Anemic Earnings Might Be Worse Than You Think
A lackluster earnings announcement from Andhra Paper Limited (NSE:ANDHRAPAP) last week didn't sink the stock price. We think that investors are worried about some weaknesses underlying the earnings.
We've discovered 3 warning signs about Andhra Paper. View them for free.Examining Cashflow Against Andhra Paper's Earnings
Many investors haven't heard of the accrual ratio from cashflow, but it is actually a useful measure of how well a company's profit is backed up by free cash flow (FCF) during a given period. To get the accrual ratio we first subtract FCF from profit for a period, and then divide that number by the average operating assets for the period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
Over the twelve months to March 2025, Andhra Paper recorded an accrual ratio of 0.32. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow was a lot less than its statutory profit, which makes us doubt the utility of profit as a guide. In the last twelve months it actually had negative free cash flow, with an outflow of ₹3.2b despite its profit of ₹889.1m, mentioned above. Coming off the back of negative free cash flow last year, we imagine some shareholders might wonder if its cash burn of ₹3.2b, this year, indicates high risk.

Our Take On Andhra Paper's Profit Performance
Andhra Paper's accrual ratio for the last twelve months signifies cash conversion is less than ideal, which is a negative when it comes to our view of its earnings. Therefore, it seems possible to us that Andhra Paper's true underlying earnings power is actually less than its statutory profit. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors.
