Stock Analysis
ICICI Prudential Life Insurance's (NSE:ICICIPRULI) investors will be pleased with their notable 73% return over the last five years
When you buy and hold a stock for the long term, you definitely want it to provide a positive return. But more than that, you probably want to see it rise more than the market average. Unfortunately for shareholders, while the ICICI Prudential Life Insurance Company Limited (NSE:ICICIPRULI) share price is up 72% in the last five years, that's less than the market return. Looking at the last year alone, the stock is up 11%.
So let's investigate and see if the longer term performance of the company has been in line with the underlying business' progress.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During five years of share price growth, ICICI Prudential Life Insurance actually saw its EPS drop 5.8% per year.
This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.
We doubt the modest 0.09% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. In contrast revenue growth of 13% per year is probably viewed as evidence that ICICI Prudential Life Insurance is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

A Different Perspective
ICICI Prudential Life Insurance provided a TSR of 11% over the last twelve months. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. If we look back over five years, the returns are even better, coming in at 12% per year for five years. It may well be that this is a business worth popping on the watching, given the continuing positive reception, over time, from the market. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand ICICI Prudential Life Insurance better, we need to consider many other factors. Like risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for ICICI Prudential Life Insurance (of which 1 doesn't sit too well with us!) you should know about.
