Tilaknagar Industries Ltd. (NSE:TI) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 33% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 44% in the last year.

Since its price has surged higher, Tilaknagar Industries' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 39.1x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 34x and even P/E's below 19x are quite common. However, the P/E might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Tilaknagar Industries hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be extremely nervous about the viability of the share price.

Is There Enough Growth For Tilaknagar Industries?

Tilaknagar Industries' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 18%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the lone analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 15% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 25% growth forecast for the broader market.

With this information, we find it concerning that Tilaknagar Industries is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance these shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Bottom Line On Tilaknagar Industries' P/E

Tilaknagar Industries shares have received a push in the right direction, but its P/E is elevated too. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

Our examination of Tilaknagar Industries' analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
