Ganges Securities (NSE:GANGESSECU) Will Be Hoping To Turn Its Returns On Capital Around

If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. However, after briefly looking over the numbers, we don't think Ganges Securities (NSE:GANGESSECU) has the makings of a multi-bagger going forward, but let's have a look at why that may be.

Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What is it?

For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for Ganges Securities:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.046 = ₹128m ÷ (₹2.8b - ₹38m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2020).

Thus, Ganges Securities has an ROCE of 4.6%. In absolute terms, that's a low return and it also under-performs the Food industry average of 12%.

So How Is Ganges Securities' ROCE Trending?

In terms of Ganges Securities' historical ROCE movements, the trend isn't fantastic. Over the last four years, returns on capital have decreased to 4.6% from 11% four years ago. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.

On a related note, Ganges Securities has decreased its current liabilities to 1.4% of total assets. So we could link some of this to the decrease in ROCE. What's more, this can reduce some aspects of risk to the business because now the company's suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of its operations. Since the business is basically funding more of its operations with it's own money, you could argue this has made the business less efficient at generating ROCE.

The Key Takeaway

In summary, despite lower returns in the short term, we're encouraged to see that Ganges Securities is reinvesting for growth and has higher sales as a result. However, despite the promising trends, the stock has fallen 16% over the last three years, so there might be an opportunity here for astute investors. As a result, we'd recommend researching this stock further to uncover what other fundamentals of the business can show us.
