IL&FS Investment Managers (NSE:IVC) Is Paying Out Less In Dividends Than Last Year
IL&FS Investment Managers Limited (NSE:IVC) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to ₹0.70 on the 12th of September. The dividend yield of 5.7% is still a nice boost to shareholder returns, despite the cut.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that IL&FS Investment Managers' stock price has increased by 35% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

IL&FS Investment Managers Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
While it is great to have a strong dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is sustainable. Before this announcement, IL&FS Investment Managers was paying out 219% of what it was earning, and not generating any free cash flows either. Paying out such a large dividend compared to earnings while also not generating free cash flows is a major warning sign for the sustainability of the dividend as these levels are certainly a bit high.
Over the next year, EPS could expand by 54.7% if the company continues along the path it has been on recently. If the dividend continues on its recent course, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 127%, which is a bit high and could start applying pressure to the balance sheet.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ₹1.00 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of ₹0.70. The dividend has shrunk at around 3.5% a year during that period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
IL&FS Investment Managers Might Find It Hard To Grow Its Dividend
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. IL&FS Investment Managers has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 55% per annum. Strong earnings is nice to see, but unless this can be sustained on minimal reinvestment of profits, we would question whether dividends will follow suit.
IL&FS Investment Managers' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
In summary, dividends being cut isn't ideal, however it can bring the payment into a more sustainable range. While we generally think the level of distributions are a bit high, we wouldn't rule it out as becoming a good dividend payer in the future as its earnings are growing healthily. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
