IL&FS Investment Managers (NSE:IVC) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
IL&FS Investment Managers Limited (NSE:IVC) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 23rd of September to ₹0.80. This makes the dividend yield 8.9%, which is above the industry average.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that IL&FS Investment Managers' stock price has increased by 43% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

IL&FS Investment Managers Is Paying Out More Than It Is Earning
A big dividend yield for a few years doesn't mean much if it can't be sustained. Before this announcement, IL&FS Investment Managers was paying out 210% of what it was earning, and not generating any free cash flows either. Paying out such a large dividend compared to earnings while also not generating free cash flows is a major warning sign for the sustainability of the dividend as these levels are certainly a bit high.
EPS is set to fall by 4.7% over the next 12 months if recent trends continue. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could reach 196%, which could put the dividend under pressure if earnings don't start to improve.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ₹1.00 in 2013 to the most recent total annual payment of ₹0.80. The dividend has shrunk at around 2.2% a year during that period. Generally, we don't like to see a dividend that has been declining over time as this can degrade shareholders' returns and indicate that the company may be running into problems.
The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Over the past five years, it looks as though IL&FS Investment Managers' EPS has declined at around 4.7% a year. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed.
IL&FS Investment Managers' Dividend Doesn't Look Great
Overall, while the dividend being raised can be good, there are some concerns about its long term sustainability. The company's earnings aren't high enough to be making such big distributions, and it isn't backed up by strong growth or consistency either. The dividend doesn't inspire confidence that it will provide solid income in the future.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
