Here's Why I Think Relaxo Footwears (NSE:RELAXO) Might Deserve Your Attention Today
Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.
In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Relaxo Footwears (NSE:RELAXO). Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Relaxo Footwears's Earnings Per Share Are Growing.
If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. It certainly is nice to see that Relaxo Footwears has managed to grow EPS by 19% per year over three years. As a result, we can understand why the stock trades on a high multiple of trailing twelve month earnings.
One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. The good news is that Relaxo Footwears is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 4.1 percentage points to 16%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

While it's always good to see growing profits, you should always remember that a weak balance sheet could come back to bite. So check Relaxo Footwears's balance sheet strength, before getting too excited.
Are Relaxo Footwears Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Relaxo Footwears insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. Indeed, with a collective holding of 71%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. At the current share price, that insider holding is worth a whopping ₹240b. Now that's what I call some serious skin in the game!
Should You Add Relaxo Footwears To Your Watchlist?
Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Relaxo Footwears's strong EPS growth. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. Of course, profit growth is one thing but it's even better if Relaxo Footwears is receiving high returns on equity, since that should imply it can keep growing without much need for capital. Of course, you can do well (sometimes) buying stocks that are not growing earnings and do not have insiders buying shares. But as a growth investor I always like to check out companies that do have those features. You can access a free list of them here.
