The one-year returns have been stellar for Semac Consultants (NSE:SEMAC) shareholders despite underlying losses increasing
Semac Consultants Limited (NSE:SEMAC) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 21% in the last week. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.
Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last year, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.
Because Semac Consultants made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.
In just one year Semac Consultants saw its revenue fall by 31%. That looks pretty grim, at a glance. The market obviously agrees, since the share price tanked 88%. Holders should not lose the lesson: loss making companies should grow revenue. But markets do over-react, so there opportunity for investors who are willing to take the time to dig deeper and understand the business.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of Semac Consultants, it has a TSR of 129% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Semac Consultants shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 129% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That gain is better than the annual TSR over five years, which is 87%. Therefore it seems like sentiment around the company has been positive lately. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Semac Consultants better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Semac Consultants is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those makes us a bit uncomfortable...
