Not Many Are Piling Into Paramount Communications Limited (NSE:PARACABLES) Stock Yet As It Plummets 25%

Paramount Communications Limited (NSE:PARACABLES) shares have had a horrible month, losing 25% after a relatively good period beforehand. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 42% in that time.

Since its price has dipped substantially, Paramount Communications may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20x, since almost half of all companies in India have P/E ratios greater than 30x and even P/E's higher than 57x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Paramount Communications has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings at a solid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this respectable earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Paramount Communications' Growth Trending?

Paramount Communications' P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow earnings per share by a handy 7.6% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 1,149% overall rise in EPS, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 25% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Paramount Communications' P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Bottom Line On Paramount Communications' P/E

Paramount Communications' recently weak share price has pulled its P/E below most other companies. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that Paramount Communications currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.
