Stock Analysis

Recent 12% pullback isn't enough to hurt long-term MBL Infrastructures (NSE:MBLINFRA) shareholders, they're still up 301% over 5 years

While MBL Infrastructures Limited (NSE:MBLINFRA) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 15% in the last quarter. But over five years returns have been remarkably great. Indeed, the share price is up a whopping 301% in that time. So it might be that some shareholders are taking profits after good performance. Of course what matters most is whether the business can improve itself sustainably, thus justifying a higher price. Unfortunately not all shareholders will have held it for the long term, so spare a thought for those caught in the 34% decline over the last twelve months.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 12%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

MBL Infrastructures wasn't profitable in the last twelve months, it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. Some companies are willing to postpone profitability to grow revenue faster, but in that case one would hope for good top-line growth to make up for the lack of earnings.

In the last 5 years MBL Infrastructures saw its revenue shrink by 13% per year. This is in stark contrast to the strong share price growth of 32%, compound, per year. There can be no doubt this kind of decoupling of revenue growth and share price growth is unusual to see in loss making companies. At the risk of upsetting holders, this does suggest that hope for a better future is playing a significant role in the share price action.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 4.2% in the last year, MBL Infrastructures shareholders lost 34%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 32% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
