Optimistic Investors Push Jyoti Structures Limited (NSE:JYOTISTRUC) Shares Up 29% But Growth Is Lacking
The Jyoti Structures Limited (NSE:JYOTISTRUC) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 29%. The annual gain comes to 121% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.
Since its price has surged higher, given around half the companies in India's Construction industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 2.3x, you may consider Jyoti Structures as a stock to avoid entirely with its 8x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

What Does Jyoti Structures' Recent Performance Look Like?
For instance, Jyoti Structures' receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. Perhaps the market believes the company can do enough to outperform the rest of the industry in the near future, which is keeping the P/S ratio high. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Jyoti Structures would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 11%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 15% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it concerning that Jyoti Structures is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited recent growth rates and are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Jyoti Structures' P/S?
The strong share price surge has lead to Jyoti Structures' P/S soaring as well. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Jyoti Structures revealed its poor three-year revenue trends aren't detracting from the P/S as much as we though, given they look worse than current industry expectations. When we see slower than industry revenue growth but an elevated P/S, there's considerable risk of the share price declining, sending the P/S lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these the share price as being reasonable.
