The board of Suprajit Engineering Limited (NSE:SUPRAJIT) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ₹1.40 on the 26th of October, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 0.5%.

Suprajit Engineering's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. However, Suprajit Engineering's earnings easily cover the dividend. As a result, a large proportion of what it earned was being reinvested back into the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 114.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 10% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Suprajit Engineering Has A Solid Track Record

The company has been paying a dividend for a long time, and it has been quite stable which gives us confidence in the future dividend potential. Since 2014, the dividend has gone from ₹0.90 total annually to ₹2.50. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 11% a year over that time. So, dividends have been growing pretty quickly, and even more impressively, they haven't experienced any notable falls during this period.

We Could See Suprajit Engineering's Dividend Growing

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Suprajit Engineering has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 6.0% per annum. A low payout ratio and decent growth suggests that the company is reinvesting well, and it also has plenty of room to increase the dividend over time.

Suprajit Engineering Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock

Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. The company is easily earning enough to cover its dividend payments and it is great to see that these earnings are being translated into cash flow. All of these factors considered, we think this has solid potential as a dividend stock.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Earnings growth generally bodes well for the future value of company dividend payments.
