Rico Auto Industries (NSE:RICOAUTO) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To ₹0.40
Rico Auto Industries Limited (NSE:RICOAUTO) will increase its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 30th of October to ₹0.40. This takes the dividend yield to 0.7%, which shareholders will be pleased with.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Rico Auto Industries' stock price has increased by 39% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.

Rico Auto Industries' Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Rico Auto Industries is quite easily earning enough to cover the dividend, however it is being let down by weak cash flows. With the company not bringing in any cash, paying out to shareholders is bound to become difficult at some point.
Looking forward, EPS could fall by 6.4% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we believe the payout ratio could be 17%, which we are pretty comfortable with and we think is feasible on an earnings basis.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ₹0.15 in 2012 to the most recent total annual payment of ₹0.40. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 10% per annum over that time. Rico Auto Industries has grown distributions at a rapid rate despite cutting the dividend at least once in the past. Companies that cut once often cut again, so we would be cautious about buying this stock solely for the dividend income.
Dividend Growth Is Doubtful
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Over the past five years, it looks as though Rico Auto Industries' EPS has declined at around 6.4% a year. Declining earnings will inevitably lead to the company paying a lower dividend in line with lower profits.
Rico Auto Industries' Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, we always like to see the dividend being raised, but we don't think Rico Auto Industries will make a great income stock. While Rico Auto Industries is earning enough to cover the payments, the cash flows are lacking. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
