Alicon Castalloy Limited (NSE:ALICON) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 26% after a shaky period beforehand. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 48% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Alicon Castalloy's P/E ratio of 29.3x, since the median price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio in India is also close to 30x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

With earnings growth that's inferior to most other companies of late, Alicon Castalloy has been relatively sluggish. It might be that many expect the uninspiring earnings performance to strengthen positively, which has kept the P/E from falling. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The P/E?

The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/E like Alicon Castalloy's is when the company's growth is tracking the market closely.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 19%. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 0.2% as estimated by the watching the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 25%, which is noticeably more attractive.

With this information, we find it interesting that Alicon Castalloy is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.

The Bottom Line On Alicon Castalloy's P/E

Its shares have lifted substantially and now Alicon Castalloy's P/E is also back up to the market median. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Alicon Castalloy currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. Right now we are uncomfortable with the P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.

Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for Alicon Castalloy (1 is a bit concerning) you should be aware of.
