When you buy a stock there is always a possibility that it could drop 100%. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. Long term Hilan Ltd. (TLV:HLAN) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 204% in five years. In the last week shares have slid back 2.8%.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

Over half a decade, Hilan managed to grow its earnings per share at 16% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 25% average annual increase in the share price. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

Investors should note that there's a difference between Hilan's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price change, which we've covered above. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Hilan's TSR of 236% over the last 5 years is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Hilan shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 8.9% over the last year. Having said that, the five-year TSR of 27% a year, is even better. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders.
