I Ran A Stock Scan For Earnings Growth And Spring Ventures (TLV:SPRG) Passed With Ease
It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'
So if you're like me, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Spring Ventures (TLV:SPRG). While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

Spring Ventures's Improving Profits
In the last three years Spring Ventures's earnings per share took off like a rocket; fast, and from a low base. So the actual rate of growth doesn't tell us much. Thus, it makes sense to focus on more recent growth rates, instead. Like the last firework on New Year's Eve accelerating into the sky, Spring Ventures's EPS shot from ₪0.35 to ₪1.01, over the last year. You don't see 193% year-on-year growth like that, very often. The best case scenario? That the business has hit a true inflection point.
I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). I note that Spring Ventures's revenue from operations was lower than its revenue in the last twelve months, so that could distort my analysis of its margins. Spring Ventures shareholders can take confidence from the fact that EBIT margins are up from 56% to 74%, and revenue is growing. That's great to see, on both counts.

Spring Ventures isn't a huge company, given its market capitalization of ₪68m. That makes it extra important to check on its balance sheet strength.
Are Spring Ventures Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?
Personally, I like to see high insider ownership of a company, since it suggests that it will be managed in the interests of shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Spring Ventures insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. Indeed, with a collective holding of 53%, company insiders are in control and have plenty of capital behind the venture. This makes me think they will be incentivised to plan for the long term - something I like to see. Valued at only ₪68m Spring Ventures is really small for a listed company. So despite a large proportional holding, insiders only have ₪36m worth of stock. That might not be a huge sum but it should be enough to keep insiders motivated!
Should You Add Spring Ventures To Your Watchlist?
Spring Ventures's earnings per share growth have been levitating higher, like a mountain goat scaling the Alps. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. At times fast EPS growth is a sign the business has reached an inflection point; and I do like those. So to my mind Spring Ventures is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies. Still, you should learn about the 2 warning signs we've spotted with Spring Ventures (including 1 which is a bit concerning) .
Although Spring Ventures certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
