Do Maslavi Construction's (TLV:MSLA) Earnings Warrant Your Attention?

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Maslavi Construction (TLV:MSLA), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Maslavi Construction's Improving Profits

Over the last three years, Maslavi Construction has grown earnings per share (EPS) like young bamboo after rain; fast, and from a low base. So I don't think the percent growth rate is particularly meaningful. As a result, I'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Like a falcon taking flight, Maslavi Construction's EPS soared from ₪0.66 to ₪1.09, over the last year. That's a commendable gain of 66%.

One way to double-check a company's growth is to look at how its revenue, and earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) margins are changing. While revenue is looking a bit flat, the good news is EBIT margins improved by 6.6 percentage points to 17%, in the last twelve months. That's something to smile about.

Since Maslavi Construction is no giant, with a market capitalization of ₪261m, so you should definitely check its cash and debt before getting too excited about its prospects.

Are Maslavi Construction Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Many consider high insider ownership to be a strong sign of alignment between the leaders of a company and the ordinary shareholders. So as you can imagine, the fact that Maslavi Construction insiders own a significant number of shares certainly appeals to me. In fact, they own 80% of the company, so they will share in the same delights and challenges experienced by the ordinary shareholders. To me this is a good sign because it suggests they will be incentivised to build value for shareholders over the long term. In terms of absolute value, insiders have ₪208m invested in the business, using the current share price. That's nothing to sneeze at!

Is Maslavi Construction Worth Keeping An Eye On?

Given my belief that share price follows earnings per share you can easily imagine how I feel about Maslavi Construction's strong EPS growth. I think that EPS growth is something to boast of, and it doesn't surprise me that insiders are holding on to a considerable chunk of shares. Fast growth and confident insiders should be enough to warrant further research. So the answer is that I do think this is a good stock to follow along with. You should always think about risks though. Case in point, we've spotted 4 warning signs for Maslavi Construction you should be aware of, and 1 of them doesn't sit too well with us.

Although Maslavi Construction certainly looks good to me, I would like it more if insiders were buying up shares. If you like to see insider buying, too, then this free list of growing companies that insiders are buying, could be exactly what you're looking for.
