Blue Square Real Estate's (TLV:BLSR) 28% CAGR outpaced the company's earnings growth over the same five-year period

The most you can lose on any stock (assuming you don't use leverage) is 100% of your money. But on a lighter note, a good company can see its share price rise well over 100%. For instance, the price of Blue Square Real Estate Ltd (TLV:BLSR) stock is up an impressive 156% over the last five years. Also pleasing for shareholders was the 25% gain in the last three months. But this could be related to the strong market, which is up 23% in the last three months.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During five years of share price growth, Blue Square Real Estate achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 12% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 21% per year, over the same period. This suggests that market participants hold the company in higher regard, these days. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. In the case of Blue Square Real Estate, it has a TSR of 238% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

Blue Square Real Estate shareholders have received returns of 68% over twelve months (even including dividends), which isn't far from the general market return. That gain looks pretty satisfying, and it is even better than the five-year TSR of 28% per year.
