Why Amot Investment's (TLV:AMOT) Shaky Earnings Are Just The Beginning Of Its Problems
Last week's earnings announcement from Amot Investment Ltd (TLV:AMOT) was disappointing to investors, with a sluggish profit figure. We did some further digging and think they have a few more reasons to be concerned beyond the statutory profit.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
Importantly, our data indicates that Amot Investment's profit received a boost of ₪248m in unusual items, over the last year. We can't deny that higher profits generally leave us optimistic, but we'd prefer it if the profit were to be sustainable. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And, after all, that's exactly what the accounting terminology implies. Amot Investment had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to December 2023. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.

Our Take On Amot Investment's Profit Performance
As previously mentioned, Amot Investment's large boost from unusual items won't be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. For this reason, we think that Amot Investment's statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. But the good news is that its EPS growth over the last three years has been very impressive. The goal of this article has been to assess how well we can rely on the statutory earnings to reflect the company's potential, but there is plenty more to consider. If you'd like to know more about Amot Investment as a business, it's important to be aware of any risks it's facing. Our analysis shows 4 warning signs for Amot Investment (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) and we strongly recommend you look at these before investing.
This note has only looked at a single factor that sheds light on the nature of Amot Investment's profit. But there are plenty of other ways to inform your opinion of a company. For example, many people consider a high return on equity as an indication of favorable business economics, while others like to 'follow the money' and search out stocks that insiders are buying.
