Reflecting on Mehadrin's (TLV:MEDN) Share Price Returns Over The Last Three Years
As an investor its worth striving to ensure your overall portfolio beats the market average. But if you try your hand at stock picking, your risk returning less than the market. We regret to report that long term Mehadrin Ltd. (TLV:MEDN) shareholders have had that experience, with the share price dropping 28% in three years, versus a market return of about 29%. The last week also saw the share price slip down another 6.4%.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the three years that the share price fell, Mehadrin's earnings per share (EPS) dropped by 40% each year. In comparison the 10% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. This suggests that the market retains some optimism around long term earnings stability, despite past EPS declines. With a P/E ratio of 51.70, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

A Different Perspective
While the broader market lost about 1.2% in the twelve months, Mehadrin shareholders did even worse, losing 1.6%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.9% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
