Nawi Group's (TLV:NAWI) one-year earnings growth trails the splendid shareholder returns
These days it's easy to simply buy an index fund, and your returns should (roughly) match the market. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the Nawi Group Ltd (TLV:NAWI) share price is up 88% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 34% (not including dividends). If it can keep that out-performance up over the long term, investors will do very well! Looking back further, the stock price is 47% higher than it was three years ago.
The past week has proven to be lucrative for Nawi Group investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's one-year performance.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Nawi Group was able to grow EPS by 1.7% in the last twelve months. This EPS growth is significantly lower than the 88% increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

What About Dividends?
It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR is a return calculation that accounts for the value of cash dividends (assuming that any dividend received was reinvested) and the calculated value of any discounted capital raisings and spin-offs. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Nawi Group, it has a TSR of 108% for the last 1 year. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Nawi Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 108% over the last year. That's including the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 19% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Nawi Group , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
