There wouldn't be many who think Isrotel Ltd.'s (TLV:ISRO) price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 16.1x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Israel is similar at about 14x. However, investors might be overlooking a clear opportunity or potential setback if there is no rational basis for the P/E.
Earnings have risen firmly for Isrotel recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.

Does Growth Match The P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like Isrotel's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 20% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 88% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
It's interesting to note that the rest of the market is similarly expected to grow by 25% over the next year, which is fairly even with the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why Isrotel is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently shareholders are comfortable to simply hold on assuming the company will continue keeping a low profile.
What We Can Learn From Isrotel's P/E?
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Isrotel maintains its moderate P/E off the back of its recent three-year growth being in line with the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement or deterioration in earnings isn't great enough to justify a high or low P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to support the share price at these levels.
