What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? One common approach is to try and find a company with returns on capital employed (ROCE) that are increasing, in conjunction with a growing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. So while Maytronics (TLV:MTRN) has a high ROCE right now, lets see what we can decipher from how returns are changing.
What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. To calculate this metric for Maytronics, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.20 = ₪237m ÷ (₪2.1b - ₪878m) (Based on the trailing twelve months to September 2023).
So, Maytronics has an ROCE of 20%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Consumer Durables industry average of 8.5%.

So How Is Maytronics' ROCE Trending?
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Maytronics doesn't inspire confidence. While it's comforting that the ROCE is high, five years ago it was 34%. However it looks like Maytronics might be reinvesting for long term growth because while capital employed has increased, the company's sales haven't changed much in the last 12 months. It may take some time before the company starts to see any change in earnings from these investments.
On a side note, Maytronics' current liabilities are still rather high at 42% of total assets. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
The Bottom Line On Maytronics' ROCE
In summary, Maytronics is reinvesting funds back into the business for growth but unfortunately it looks like sales haven't increased much just yet. Investors must think there's better things to come because the stock has knocked it out of the park, delivering a 103% gain to shareholders who have held over the last five years. Ultimately, if the underlying trends persist, we wouldn't hold our breath on it being a multi-bagger going forward.
