With Glanbia plc (ISE:GL9) It Looks Like You'll Get What You Pay For
With a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 34.6x Glanbia plc (ISE:GL9) may be sending very bearish signals at the moment, given that almost half of all companies in Ireland have P/E ratios under 13x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
Glanbia could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It might be that many expect the dour earnings performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

How Is Glanbia's Growth Trending?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Glanbia's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 58%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk EPS by 36% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the seven analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 39% per annum over the next three years. With the market only predicted to deliver 10.0% per year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
With this information, we can see why Glanbia is trading at such a high P/E compared to the market. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Final Word
Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We've established that Glanbia maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
