Here's Why I Think OTP Bank Nyrt (BUSE:OTP) Is An Interesting Stock

For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it completely lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.'

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like OTP Bank Nyrt (BUSE:OTP). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Quickly Is OTP Bank Nyrt Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That makes EPS growth an attractive quality for any company. OTP Bank Nyrt managed to grow EPS by 9.8% per year, over three years. That growth rate is fairly good, assuming the company can keep it up.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. Not all of OTP Bank Nyrt's revenue this year is revenue from operations, so keep in mind the revenue and margin numbers I've used might not be the best representation of the underlying business. OTP Bank Nyrt maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 20% to Ft1.2t. That's a real positive.

Are OTP Bank Nyrt Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

Since OTP Bank Nyrt has a market capitalization of Ft4.6t, we wouldn't expect insiders to hold a large percentage of shares. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at Ft102b. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.

It means a lot to see insiders invested in the business, but I find myself wondering if remuneration policies are shareholder friendly. Well, based on the CEO pay, I'd say they are indeed. For companies with market capitalizations over Ft2.4t, like OTP Bank Nyrt, the median CEO pay is around Ft1.0b.

The CEO of OTP Bank Nyrt was paid just Ft9.7m in total compensation for the year ending . This could be considered a token amount, and indicates that the company does not need to use payment to motivate the CEO - that is often a good sign. While the level of CEO compensation isn't a huge factor in my view of the company, modest remuneration is a positive, because it suggests that the board keeps shareholder interests in mind. It can also be a sign of a culture of integrity, in a broader sense.

Does OTP Bank Nyrt Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

As I already mentioned, OTP Bank Nyrt is a growing business, which is what I like to see. The fact that EPS is growing is a genuine positive for OTP Bank Nyrt, but the pretty picture gets better than that. With a meaningful level of insider ownership, and reasonable CEO pay, a reasonable mind might conclude that this is one stock worth watching. Don't forget that there may still be risks.
