China Resources Gas Group (HKG:1193) Will Pay A Dividend Of HK$0.70
The board of China Resources Gas Group Limited (HKG:1193) has announced that it will pay a dividend of HK$0.70 per share on the 18th of July. This means that the annual payment is 4.3% of the current stock price, which is lower than what the rest of the industry is paying.
China Resources Gas Group's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
It would be nice for the yield to be higher, but we should also check if higher levels of dividend payment would be sustainable. The last dividend was quite comfortably covered by China Resources Gas Group's earnings, but it was a bit tighter on the cash flow front. The company is clearly earning enough to pay this type of dividend, but it is definitely focused on returning cash to shareholders, rather than growing the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 27.4%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 48%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility
The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. Since 2015, the dividend has gone from HK$0.25 total annually to HK$0.95. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 14% over that duration. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. China Resources Gas Group has seen earnings per share falling at 5.3% per year over the last five years. If the company is making less over time, it naturally follows that it will also have to pay out less in dividends. Earnings are forecast to grow over the next 12 months and if that happens we could still be a little bit cautious until it becomes a pattern.
Our Thoughts On China Resources Gas Group's Dividend
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. The low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, but generally we are not too happy with the payments China Resources Gas Group has been making. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
