Qilu Expressway (HKG:1576) Will Pay A Smaller Dividend Than Last Year
Qilu Expressway Company Limited (HKG:1576) is reducing its dividend from last year's comparable payment to CN¥0.1645 on the 30th of August. Despite the cut, the dividend yield of 7.3% will still be comparable to other companies in the industry.

Qilu Expressway's Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Before making this announcement, Qilu Expressway was earning enough to cover the dividend, but it wasn't generating any free cash flows. No cash flows could definitely make returning cash to shareholders difficult, or at least mean the balance sheet will come under pressure.
Looking forward, earnings per share could rise by 2.1% over the next year if the trend from the last few years continues. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 60% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Qilu Expressway's Dividend Has Lacked Consistency
It's comforting to see that Qilu Expressway has been paying a dividend for a number of years now, however it has been cut at least once in that time. This makes us cautious about the consistency of the dividend over a full economic cycle. Since 2019, the annual payment back then was CN¥0.129, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CN¥0.15. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 3.1% a year over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
Qilu Expressway May Find It Hard To Grow The Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 2.1% per year. Growth of 2.1% may indicate that the company has limited investment opportunity so it is returning its earnings to shareholders instead. This isn't necessarily bad, but we wouldn't expect rapid dividend growth in the future.
In Summary
Overall, the dividend looks like it may have been a bit high, which explains why it has now been cut. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We don't think Qilu Expressway is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable.
