Qilu Expressway Company Limited (HKG:1576) will increase its dividend on the 31st of August to HK$0.22, which is 22% higher than last year. This will take the dividend yield from 9.4% to 9.5%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Qilu Expressway's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
If the payments aren't sustainable, a high yield for a few years won't matter that much. Based on the last payment, Qilu Expressway was quite comfortably earning enough to cover the dividend. This means that a large portion of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.
If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 13.3% over the next 12 months. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 61% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.
Qilu Expressway Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
Looking back, the dividend has been stable, but the company hasn't been paying a dividend for very long so we can't be confident that the dividend will remain stable through all economic environments. Since 2019, the first annual payment was CN¥0.13, compared to the most recent full-year payment of CN¥0.18. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 18% per annum over that time. The dividend has been growing rapidly, however with such a short payment history we can't know for sure if payment can continue to grow over the long term, so caution may be warranted.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Qilu Expressway has impressed us by growing EPS at 13% per year over the past five years. Earnings are on the uptrend, and it is only paying a small portion of those earnings to shareholders.
We Really Like Qilu Expressway's Dividend
In summary, it is always positive to see the dividend being increased, and we are particularly pleased with its overall sustainability. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one.
