Is Ju Teng International Holdings (HKG:3336) A Risky Investment?
Legendary fund manager Li Lu (who Charlie Munger backed) once said, 'The biggest investment risk is not the volatility of prices, but whether you will suffer a permanent loss of capital.' So it might be obvious that you need to consider debt, when you think about how risky any given stock is, because too much debt can sink a company. As with many other companies Ju Teng International Holdings Limited (HKG:3336) makes use of debt. But is this debt a concern to shareholders?
Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt and other liabilities become risky for a business when it cannot easily fulfill those obligations, either with free cash flow or by raising capital at an attractive price. Ultimately, if the company can't fulfill its legal obligations to repay debt, shareholders could walk away with nothing. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, the upside of debt is that it often represents cheap capital, especially when it replaces dilution in a company with the ability to reinvest at high rates of return. The first step when considering a company's debt levels is to consider its cash and debt together.

What Is Ju Teng International Holdings's Debt?
The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Ju Teng International Holdings had debt of HK$3.67b at the end of June 2023, a reduction from HK$4.77b over a year. However, it also had HK$1.36b in cash, and so its net debt is HK$2.31b.
How Strong Is Ju Teng International Holdings' Balance Sheet?
We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Ju Teng International Holdings had liabilities of HK$5.00b falling due within a year, and liabilities of HK$924.0m due beyond that. On the other hand, it had cash of HK$1.36b and HK$2.52b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by HK$2.05b.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the HK$1.02b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. At the end of the day, Ju Teng International Holdings would probably need a major re-capitalization if its creditors were to demand repayment. When analysing debt levels, the balance sheet is the obvious place to start. But it is Ju Teng International Holdings's earnings that will influence how the balance sheet holds up in the future. So if you're keen to discover more about its earnings, it might be worth checking out this graph of its long term earnings trend.
In the last year Ju Teng International Holdings had a loss before interest and tax, and actually shrunk its revenue by 35%, to HK$7.0b. That makes us nervous, to say the least.
Caveat Emptor
While Ju Teng International Holdings's falling revenue is about as heartwarming as a wet blanket, arguably its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) loss is even less appealing. Its EBIT loss was a whopping HK$702m. Considering that alongside the liabilities mentioned above make us nervous about the company. It would need to improve its operations quickly for us to be interested in it. But on the bright side the company actually produced a statutory profit of HK$419k and free cash flow of HK$1.4b. So one might argue that there's still a chance it can get things on the right track. There's no doubt that we learn most about debt from the balance sheet. However, not all investment risk resides within the balance sheet - far from it. To that end, you should be aware of the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Ju Teng International Holdings .
