Sunshine 100 China Holdings' (HKG:2608) Shareholders Are Down 66% On Their Shares
The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. But long term Sunshine 100 China Holdings Ltd (HKG:2608) shareholders have had a particularly rough ride in the last three year. Unfortunately, they have held through a 66% decline in the share price in that time. There was little comfort for shareholders in the last week as the price declined a further 5.6%.

While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, Sunshine 100 China Holdings moved from a loss to profitability. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.
Given the healthiness of the dividend payments, we doubt that they've concerned the market. It's good to see that Sunshine 100 China Holdings has increased its revenue over the last three years. If the company can keep growing revenue, there may be an opportunity for investors. You might have to dig deeper to understand the recent share price weakness.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. We note that for Sunshine 100 China Holdings the TSR over the last 3 years was -64%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.
A Different Perspective
Investors in Sunshine 100 China Holdings had a tough year, with a total loss of 12% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 6.1%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. However, the loss over the last year isn't as bad as the 10% per annum loss investors have suffered over the last half decade. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Take risks, for example - Sunshine 100 China Holdings has 3 warning signs (and 1 which makes us a bit uncomfortable) we think you should know about.
