China Overseas Property Holdings' (HKG:2669) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
China Overseas Property Holdings Limited (HKG:2669) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 14th of July to HK$0.08. This takes the annual payment to 1.5% of the current stock price, which unfortunately is below what the industry is paying.

China Overseas Property Holdings' Dividend Is Well Covered By Earnings
If it is predictable over a long period, even low dividend yields can be attractive. However, prior to this announcement, China Overseas Property Holdings' dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This means that most of what the business earns is being used to help it grow.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 102.6%. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 19% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
China Overseas Property Holdings Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 7 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. The annual payment during the last 7 years was HK$0.012 in 2016, and the most recent fiscal year payment was HK$0.12. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 39% per annum over that time. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. It's encouraging to see that China Overseas Property Holdings has been growing its earnings per share at 33% a year over the past five years. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.
China Overseas Property Holdings Looks Like A Great Dividend Stock
Overall, we think this could be an attractive income stock, and it is only getting better by paying a higher dividend this year. Earnings are easily covering distributions, and the company is generating plenty of cash. Taking this all into consideration, this looks like it could be a good dividend opportunity.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
