Tomson Group's (HKG:258) Shareholders Will Receive A Bigger Dividend Than Last Year
The board of Tomson Group Limited (HKG:258) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 30% on the 12th of June to HK$0.13, up from last year's comparable payment of HK$0.10. Even though the dividend went up, the yield is still quite low at only 3.4%.
Tomson Group's Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable
While yield is important, another factor to consider about a company's dividend is whether the current payout levels are feasible. Based on the last payment, Tomson Group's profits didn't cover the dividend, but the company was generating enough cash instead. Healthy cash flows are always a positive sign, especially when they quite easily cover the dividend.
Looking forward, EPS could fall by 1.0% if the company can't turn things around from the last few years. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio could reach 135%, which could put the dividend in jeopardy if the company's earnings don't improve.

Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of HK$0.12 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of HK$0.10. The dividend has shrunk at around 1.8% a year during that period. A company that decreases its dividend over time generally isn't what we are looking for.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to evaluate if earnings per share is growing, which could point to a growing dividend in the future. Tomson Group hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years.
Tomson Group's Dividend Doesn't Look Sustainable
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company is generating plenty of cash, which could maintain the dividend for a while, but the track record hasn't been great. We would be a touch cautious of relying on this stock primarily for the dividend income.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
