Investors Continue Waiting On Sidelines For Star Group Company Limited (HKG:1560)
You may think that with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.1x Star Group Company Limited (HKG:1560) is a stock worth checking out, seeing as almost half of all the Real Estate companies in Hong Kong have P/S ratios greater than 0.7x and even P/S higher than 3x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Star Group's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Star Group over the last year, which is not ideal at all. It might be that many expect the disappointing revenue performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/S. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Star Group's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The Low P/S Ratio?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Star Group's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 27%. The latest three year period has seen an incredible overall rise in revenue, a stark contrast to the last 12 months. So while the company has done a great job in the past, it's somewhat concerning to see revenue growth decline so harshly.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 4.0% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we find it odd that Star Group is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Star Group's P/S
Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
We're very surprised to see Star Group currently trading on a much lower than expected P/S since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider industry forecast. When we see strong revenue with faster-than-industry growth, we assume there are some significant underlying risks to the company's ability to make money which is applying downwards pressure on the P/S ratio. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see a lot of volatility.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Star Group (at least 1 which doesn't sit too well with us), and understanding these should be part of your investment process.
