Optimistic Investors Push Akeso, Inc. (HKG:9926) Shares Up 27% But Growth Is Lacking
Akeso, Inc. (HKG:9926) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 27% gain in the last month alone. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 51%.
After such a large jump in price, Akeso may be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 23.5x, since almost half of all companies in the Biotechs industry in Hong Kong have P/S ratios under 9.4x and even P/S lower than 2x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Has Akeso Performed Recently?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Akeso's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the market is expecting the poor revenue to reverse, justifying it's current high P/S.. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Akeso's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 57% decrease to the company's top line. Spectacularly, three year revenue growth has ballooned by several orders of magnitude, despite the drawbacks experienced in the last 12 months. Accordingly, shareholders will be pleased, but also have some serious questions to ponder about the last 12 months.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 56% per annum as estimated by the analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be similar to the 52% per year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it interesting that Akeso is trading at a high P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Although, additional gains will be difficult to achieve as this level of revenue growth is likely to weigh down the share price eventually.
What We Can Learn From Akeso's P/S?
The strong share price surge has lead to Akeso's P/S soaring as well. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Analysts are forecasting Akeso's revenues to only grow on par with the rest of the industry, which has lead to the high P/S ratio being unexpected. When we see revenue growth that just matches the industry, we don't expect elevates P/S figures to remain inflated for the long-term. Unless the company can jump ahead of the rest of the industry in the short-term, it'll be a challenge to maintain the share price at current levels.
