For beginners, it can seem like a good idea (and an exciting prospect) to buy a company that tells a good story to investors, even if it currently lacks a track record of revenue and profit. But as Peter Lynch said in One Up On Wall Street, 'Long shots almost never pay off.' Loss making companies can act like a sponge for capital - so investors should be cautious that they're not throwing good money after bad.

So if this idea of high risk and high reward doesn't suit, you might be more interested in profitable, growing companies, like Maoyan Entertainment (HKG:1896). Now this is not to say that the company presents the best investment opportunity around, but profitability is a key component to success in business.

How Fast Is Maoyan Entertainment Growing Its Earnings Per Share?

In the last three years Maoyan Entertainment's earnings per share took off; so much so that it's a bit disingenuous to use these figures to try and deduce long term estimates. As a result, we'll zoom in on growth over the last year, instead. Impressively, Maoyan Entertainment's EPS catapulted from CN¥0.12 to CN¥0.31, over the last year. It's a rarity to see 169% year-on-year growth like that.

Top-line growth is a great indicator that growth is sustainable, and combined with a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin, it's a great way for a company to maintain a competitive advantage in the market. EBIT margins for Maoyan Entertainment remained fairly unchanged over the last year, however the company should be pleased to report its revenue growth for the period of 22% to CN¥3.3b. The Maoyan Entertainment CEO received CN¥2.9m in compensation for the year ending December 2022. That is actually below the median for CEO's of similarly sized companies.
