Why Kuaishou Technology's (HKG:1024) Earnings Are Better Than They Seem
Shareholders appeared to be happy with Kuaishou Technology's (HKG:1024) solid earnings report last week. This reaction by the market reaction is understandable when looking at headline profits and we have found some further encouraging factors.
Zooming In On Kuaishou Technology's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
Therefore, it's actually considered a good thing when a company has a negative accrual ratio, but a bad thing if its accrual ratio is positive. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. Notably, there is some academic evidence that suggests that a high accrual ratio is a bad sign for near-term profits, generally speaking.
For the year to June 2025, Kuaishou Technology had an accrual ratio of -0.24. Therefore, its statutory earnings were very significantly less than its free cashflow. Indeed, in the last twelve months it reported free cash flow of CN¥20b, well over the CN¥16.1b it reported in profit. Kuaishou Technology did see its free cash flow drop year on year, which is less than ideal, like a Simpson's episode without Groundskeeper Willie. However, that's not all there is to consider. We can see that unusual items have impacted its statutory profit, and therefore the accrual ratio.

The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
While the accrual ratio might bode well, we also note that Kuaishou Technology's profit was boosted by unusual items worth CN¥1.8b in the last twelve months. While it's always nice to have higher profit, a large contribution from unusual items sometimes dampens our enthusiasm. When we crunched the numbers on thousands of publicly listed companies, we found that a boost from unusual items in a given year is often not repeated the next year. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. If Kuaishou Technology doesn't see that contribution repeat, then all else being equal we'd expect its profit to drop over the current year.
Our Take On Kuaishou Technology's Profit Performance
Kuaishou Technology's profits got a boost from unusual items, which indicates they might not be sustained and yet its accrual ratio still indicated solid cash conversion, which is promising. Based on these factors, we think that Kuaishou Technology's profits are a reasonably conservative guide to its underlying profitability.
