Despite shrinking by HK$157m in the past week, Feiyu Technology International (HKG:1022) shareholders are still up 265% over 5 years
The Feiyu Technology International Company Ltd. (HKG:1022) share price has had a bad week, falling 13%. But that scarcely detracts from the really solid long term returns generated by the company over five years. We think most investors would be happy with the 265% return, over that period. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Only time will tell if there is still too much optimism currently reflected in the share price.
In light of the stock dropping 13% in the past week, we want to investigate the longer term story, and see if fundamentals have been the driver of the company's positive five-year return.
In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.
During the five years of share price growth, Feiyu Technology International moved from a loss to profitability. Sometimes, the start of profitability is a major inflection point that can signal fast earnings growth to come, which in turn justifies very strong share price gains.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

A Different Perspective
It's nice to see that Feiyu Technology International shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 202% over the last year. That's better than the annualised return of 30% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Feiyu Technology International you should know about.
